Lear Macaw

The lear macaw is quickly becoming extinct; a photo of these birds in aviaries is unique considering their rarity. Only about 200 of these beautiful birds remain in the wild today. The main threats are: pet trade and hunting for food, depletion of the palm trees for livestock and agriculture, and habitat loss to livestock and agriculture. Breeders try to preserve these birds in captivity. The lear macaw is quickly becoming extinct; a photo of these birds in aviaries is unique considering their rarity.
